An alderwoman of the group “The United”, Mila Popovic, said on Nov. 14 that 39 signatures by members of the Belgrade parliament had been collected to support a special session to discuss a resignation by Mayor Aleksandar Sapic.
Popovic said to reporters in the Belgrade city administration building that the session should be convened within seven days as of the date of the request, and held within 15 days. She explained that only the Oath Keepers, Dveri and NADA coalition didn’t support the move.
“It is clear who makes the genuine opposition in Serbia, and whose goal is not only to dismiss Sapic, but to see an end to the Serbian Progressive Party’s regime, after it has been devastating Belgrade for nine years,” Popovic said.
The United alderwoman underscored that Sapic could not possible be Belgrade’s mayor, because he had broken the law.
“At the helm of the Novi Beograd municipality, he started building a home with no permit whatsoever, and as a mayor he made it legal, even though only the legalization cases dating back to 2015 can be subject to legalization,” Popovic explained.
Sapic said that the demand by the Belgrade opposition to hold a special session to urge his resignation was a mere political performance.
Sapic said in a comment for N1 TV that aldermen and alderwomen were allowed to demand his resignation at every session, and the only thing they should do was to ask for an amendment to the assembly’s agenda.
