EU had allocated EUR20.8 million to support the rule of law reforms in Serbia, it was said on Dec. 20 at the presentation of a project titled “The EU for the Rule of Law,” focusing on helping Serbia to achieve goals set under Chapter 23 (judiciary and fundamental rights) and Chapter 24 (justice, freedom and security).
EU Delegation to Serbia Head Emanuele Giaufret said the EU was committed to integration of the Western Balkans and underlined the importance of the rule of law reforms for Belgrade’s continued EU path.
Giaufret also said that along with the rule of law reforms, Serbia’s EU accession also depended on normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina and alignment with EU foreign policy in the context of Russia’s aggression on Ukraine.
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said that the rule of law was among her cabinet’s top priorities, adding that the rule of law reforms were among the most important reforms for a better life of citizens.
German Ambassador to Serbia Anke Konrad underlined the importance of the rule of law reforms for the quality of life of all citizens, while Austrian Ambassador Christian Ebner said the rule of law was not negotiable and that the system had to ensure it.
