An Air Serbia plane carrying six tons of humanitarian aid for Syria, which was recently struck by an earthquake has been sent off from the Nikola Tesla Airport.

The plane is carrying the first shipment of around six tons of food and necessities to the most endangered parts of the country, the Serbian Ministry of Defense announced on March 2. Minister of Defense Milos Vucevic saw the shipment off as a representative of the Serbian government. He said that he was sure that more shipments would be organized in the weeks and days to come.

"This is merely the first shipment, a little less than six tons of food, while the [Syrian] ambassador told me that there was over 100 tons of food that had been collected only for Syria," Vucevic said and voiced the hope that the conditions would be created in terms of payment traffic, so that the Serbian government could donate money to Syria.

Syrian Ambassador to Serbia Bassem Jouman Agha voiced his gratitude to Serbia, its officials and citizens for the aid. "Here we see boxes and staples that are going directly to the airport in Damascus, and there will be more in the period to come," the ambassador said.
