Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic's statements are a "trial balloon" for a mass expulsion of Roma from the capital, which is why the ruling Serbian Progressive Party needs to react, the Roma Party said in a news release on March 17.

Responding to Sapic's offensive statements about how the Roma living in informal settlements do not want to integrate into society, the Roma Party said this was preparation for the organized displacement of people from those settlements.

"The aim of that action is not to resolve the issue of socially vulnerable groups in a civilized manner, but rather to secure attractive locations for construction," the Roma Party said and called on Sapic's Serbian Progressive Party to take a stance regarding his statements.

If the Progressive party does not condemn said statements by March 25, the Roma Party will address other parties in the Serbian parliament and the Belgrade City Assembly, too.

A warning protest rally is also planned for May 5.
