Montenegro’s possible membership in the Open Balkans Initiative is a matter for the Cabinet and Parliament to decide, the country’s new president-elect, Jakov Milatovic, said on April 20, adding that he firmly believes it is better to be “a member of an open rather than closed Balkans.”
“The notion of the European Union was born as an idea of regional economic cooperation between the Benelux countries, Germany, France and Italy. When speaking of European integrations, we in the Balkans often forget the importance of our own regional economic integrations. Furthering ties and regional cooperation is something I, as an economist, have always advocated,” Milatovic told the NIN weekly.
He stated that EU membership is a priority for Montenegro but said this does mean that regional economic cooperation should not be improved.
“In fact, I believe that is an integral aspect of our EU integration,” Milatovic concluded.
