The representatives of the Serbian government, representative trade unions and the Serbian Association of Employers, who are members of the Social and Economic Council, are launching negotiations on a new minimum wage on May 19.

Two representative unions - United Branch Trade Unions "Independence" and the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia - submitted the initiative for the talks. They hope that the minimum wage could undergo an emergency raise this year due to growing inflation.

They propose that the minimum monthly salary, which currently amounts to 40,020 dinars, be equal to the cost of the minimum consumer basket, which has surpassed 50,000 dinars.

The Ministry of Finance has issued a statement regarding that stance of the unions, saying that the minimum wage is raised once a year and that the new minimum wage will be in effect as of Jan. 1, 2024.

Last September, the Serbian government decided to raise the minimum monthly salary by 14.3 percent as of this year, to 40,020 dinars.

According to the unions' estimates, between 350,000 and 400,000 people in Serbia receive the minimum wage, while just over 50 percent of the employed work for roughly 60,000 dinars.
