The European Parliament’s rapporteur for Kosovo Viola von Cramon urged the authorities in Kosovo during her visit to Pristina on May 29 to withdraw special police units from the north of Kosovo and sit at the negotiating table, underlining that the situation in the north could be resolved through a constructive dialogue only.

Von Cramon said to reporters that Kosovo had taken a serious risk by conducting “the maneuvers in the north.” “Is this the form of good governance we want? Instead, we should have more trust building measures. A dialogue within Kosovo is the only way out of the situation,” she said.

When asked about her words to the Kosovo Police in the north, where on May 28 she asked: “What the hell are you doing?”, she explained that she “only asked if they believed it was really necessary for them to stay there,” adding that she would ask the same question as a protester in Germany.

Von Cramon described as “good and fruitful” the meeting she had with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti on May 28, underlining that it’s up to the Government of Kosovo to make necessary decisions. “I have only shared my concerns. Do the new local authorities have legitimacy? I don’t doubt they do. But I only shared my concerns,” the EP rapporteur for Kosovo said, adding that Kosovo would be provided with support, but that it needed to act wisely.
