After meetings with U.S. officials, Kosovo Premier Albin Kurti has announced the possibility of holding new local elections in the north of Kosovo, in Serb-majority environments, which France and Germany proposed earlier.
"Removing violent mobs in front of municipality buildings and full implementation of the Brussels Agreement is the way toward de-escalation until new elections," Kurti tweeted late on June 1, after talks with U.S. senators Chris Murphy, Pete Ricketts and Jeanne Shaheen.
Kurti previously also mentioned new elections in northern Kosovo municipalities after a meeting with U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Jonathan Finer.
"Thanked him for his call and committed to work with the U.S. to de-escalate tensions. This requires an immediate end to violence by Belgrade-sponsored mobs against security officers," Kurti said on Twitter.
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani also said late on June 1 that the Kosovo authorities were ready to consider the request by French and German leaders for new local elections in four northern Kosovo municipalities.
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on June 1 appealed to Serbia and Kosovo to ensure that new elections are organized in Kosovo's north as soon as possible, with the Serbs' participation.
