While much work lies ahead of Serbia now that it has been chosen to host the 2027 world expo, the decision itself is a huge win for both the country and the region, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on June 22.
“This is a great achievement for Serbia and the entire region, and I hope that, by then, the circumstances will be different and better so that the entire region will be here to host the world,” Vucic told the RTS public service.
The president also thanked U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for their congratulatory messages. Both countries submitted candidatures alongside Serbia.
“Belgrade will become Europe’s largest construction site,” Vucic further said, explaining that the event – whose working title is EXPO 2027 – will bring the country immense exposure along with about EUR500 million directly, and EUR600 indirectly.
“That year, as of May, Belgrade will be the best place to holiday in the entire world,” Vucic asserted.
Among five candidate countries, Serbia was chosen to host the event on Jun 21, winning all four rounds of votes at the General Assembly of the International Bureau of Expositions (BIE). In the final round its competitor was Spain.
