The Bureau for Social Research (BIRODI) think-tank on July 7 wished citizens a happy Day of Serbian Uprising in World War II, saying that the society could be proud of this holiday.

The organization pointed out that "a strategy of oblivion is increasingly dominating the cultural memory of our society where World War II is concerned."
"To a lesser or greater extent, erasure, suppression, ignoring, silence, denial, or decontextualization of almost all holidays commemorating the people's liberation war are at work," BIRODI said, stressing the importance of celebrating the beginning of resistance against the Nazi occupier and the struggle for a more just society.

"Present-day historiographical (self-)awareness and policy of remembrance are deconstructing what should be unquestionable values. In the name of alleged deideologization, the essential moral and value differences from World War II are being blurred," said BIRODI.

The organization believes that in times of growing class inequality, it is precious for citizens to remember those who advocated a just society, among other things.
