The League of Vojvodina’s Social Democrats – the Vojvodinians said on Aug. 2 that African swine fever (ASF) unveiled “a complete lack of capability” of the state to address the elementary problems that farmers had been struggling with for decades.

The party whip, Sasa Sucurovic, said in a statement that it’s high time that the problem be addressed seriously, “instead of ad-hoc reactions, with no long-term plan or program.” Sucurovic underlined that the problem did not affect only farm animal breeders, but also food safety, human health and the survival of rural areas, which was why he requested stricter livestock controls.

“The uncontrolled drugs imports, unprofessional healing treatments without veterinary supervision have only added fuel to the fire, allowing for the disease to spread more quickly,” Sucurovic warned. The League’s official also said that the existing punishment policy produced very poor results, and that the measures had to be tightened, particularly when a person responsible for a pig transport could not present adequate papers.
