The August 2023 report of the ANEM Association of Independent Electronic Media states that the number of incidents targeting journalists has continued rising, in a "concerning indicator" that the state of media freedoms is declining.
The report notes that there is a noticeable lack of political will for true regulation of the media field, and that Serbia is the "tenth country in Europe" by number of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP).
ANEM's report also states that, according to the data of the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office, published in August by the Standing Working Group for the Safety of Journalists, there had been 50 cases of threats against or attacks on journalists by the end of July 2023.
The report also cites a statement by the European Federation of Journalists, posted on its website early in August, which read that "incidents of disrespect for the work of journalists are multiplying in Serbia," which is why EFJ president Maja Sever urged the Serbian authorities to respect the role and mission of media outlets in a democratic society, and called on Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic to "reconsider her attitude towards Serbian journalists," in view of the increasingly frequent incidents.
