The New Communist Party of Yugoslavia and the Alliance of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia released a statement on Sept. 28 announcing that they would soon begin collecting signatures for abolishing the Law on Elections and the Law on Political Parties which they found to be discriminatory toward the political representatives "of our country's working people."

They said that according to these laws, to nominate a ticket for elections 10,000 signatures needed to be verified by a court for parliamentary elections and 3,000 for elections in Belgrade.

"This law was brought to stop the communists as the only true representatives of the interests of working people, to participate in elections. In these conditions of anti-communist hysteria people who support the New Communist Party of Yugoslavia the Alliance of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia are being asked to declare themselves as members of sympathizers of communists by having their signatures verified in court," they added in the statement.

They also said that the same applied according to the Law on Political Parties which required 10,000 signatures for registration and also entailed a fee. "The New Communist Party of Yugoslavia and the Alliance of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia demands that the number of 10,000 signatures be lowered to 1,000 and from 3,000 to 300 for city elections in Belgrade, as well as that the verification of these signatures be free of charge," they added in the statement.
