While it remains unclear whether the promised snap elections will take place in December, it is certain that the regime will schedule the vote according to its own interests, not those of the public or the opposition, Serbia Center party head Zdravko Ponos stated on Oct. 12.
Speaking for the latest edition of the Vreme weekly, Ponos maintained that President Aleksandar Vucic is likely already conducting public opinion polls and studying the results in an attempt to determine “how to navigate his way out of [his] current crisis.”
“The pressure from Europe is strong, the threats of sanctions quite serious. He’s in an uncomfortable spot, but the question is whether we know how to use that appropriately, whether we are preparing for the elections well, with the goal to win,” Ponos concluded.
Asked about the possibility of the opposition uniting for the elections, he said that his party is in a less-than-ideal position because it does not belong to the parliamentary opposition, which, he said, has “become a bit of an exclusive circle closed” to outsiders.
