According to Momcilo Vidojevic, the president of the New Police Union Alliance, an increasing number of employees is leaving the Serbian Interior Ministry over the politicization and criminalization of the police force, harassment and low salaries.
“For years now, positions of leadership have been filled by people who bend to the will of politicians and criminals, which honorable and honest police officers cannot bear, deciding instead to leave the Ministry and take much harder and less paid jobs because they cannot take the humiliation,” Vidojevic told the Oct. 16 edition of the Danas daily.
The union alliance leader said that there is no official data on how many officers have turned in their badge and sidearm, but that their number is indisputably high and ever-growing.
According to unofficial estimates, about 700 employees have left the police force since the beginning of the year.
