Expert: Criminals Will Not Peacefully Surrender to Authorities Because They Know They Will Go to Prison

School of Philosophy professor Jovo Bakic said on Nov. 9 that as many Serbian citizens as possible needed to vote in elections on Dec. 17 and that they should choose the candidate that they found the least offensive.

In an interview with BETA he said he doubted that the incumbent authorities would peacefully recognize a potential defeat. He said that political supply "is far from good" and that "unfortunately we always ask ourselves which oppositionist is serving the regime."

"We have regime people on all sides, however, there are also quality people in the opposition who should be supported, like, for example, the Local Front from Kraljevo." If the turnout is insufficient, this will mean that the existing regime will definitely survive. If we go to the polls there is at least a theoretical chance that this government can be ousted, the professor said.

Asked whether the incumbent government could be replaced in elections, Bakic said that that was impossible. "That is impossible, but it is important that we take a piece out of their legitimacy and see whether anyone in the opposition will cooperate with the regime," he said, adding that he supported a resolution by a group of intellectuals who called on citizens to vote to stop the explosion of crime and corruption in society.
