Speaking at a General Conference of UNESCO in Paris on Nov. 9, Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic announced Serbia’s candidacy for membership in this U.N. organization’s Executive Board and spoke about the risks to Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo.

The vote on the new members of the Executive Board is scheduled for Nov. 15 and other candidates are Russia, Slovakia, Czechia, Uzbekistan and Albania.

Dacic said during his address that Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo was in jeopardy despite being under UNESCO protection, because the international military and civilian missions only guarded certain monasteries and churches.

He recollected that “the Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo and Metohija, with 1,300 holy sites, is of immeasurable importance not only for the national identity of Serbia, but also as part of the valuable European and world cultural heritage,” but that “unfortunately, it is subjected to constant attempts at renaming, revision of historical facts and physical desecration.”

Dacic met with Foreign Minister of Colombia Alvaro Leyva on the sidelines of the 42nd General Conference of UNESCO in Paris. They discussed the developing of bilateral relations through the advancement of political, economic and commercial cooperation.
