It is not true that the Serbian Progressive Party is having voters from other cities register as Belgrade residents ahead of the Dec. 17 elections, Ana Brnabic, the outgoing prime minister and Progressives’ Belgrade chapter ombudswoman, said on Nov. 13.
Speaking for Happy TV, Brnabic explained that all municipal birth registries are linked to a unified electoral roll, which, along with the centralized census database, makes any such machinations impossible.
“Where are we importing these people from? [The opposition] resurrects this story ahead of each election. If one were to believe [Freedom and Justice Party leader] Dragan Djilas, it would mean Serbia has 60 million denizens by now. We can’t steal [votes] because we brought order to the system. If the people don’t want us, then they don’t want us. [Then] we’ll be a serious and stable opposition,” Brnabic said.
She added that the same person voting twice in the same elections, at two different polling stations, was possible until 2012, because before then, the country did not have a unified electoral roll and every municipality had its own voter registry.
