Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has called an urgent meeting with certain Cabinet ministers for late on Jan. 31, to discuss Belgrade’s further steps now that Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has rejected recommendations from the U.S, EU and Quint to rescind the decision to abolish the use of the dinar in Kosovo.
Several weeks ago, the Central Bank of Kosovo issued a decree demanding that, as of Feb. 1, all cash transactions in Kosovo be conducted exclusively using euros.
EU Special Envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue Miroslav Lajcak stated on Jan. 30 that he spoke with Kurti about the dinar ban, but, when asked whether they discussed delaying the decree, refused to go into details.
“We discussed the Central Bank of Kosovo’s decision but I do not wish to act as a substitute for the Kosovo government. You’ll be notified of everything on [Dec. 31],” he told a press conference.
