At a ceremony held in military camp Butmir near Sarajevo on Jan. 31, Hungarian Major Gen. Laszlo Sticz took over command of European Union Force (EUFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina from Austria’s Major Gen. Helmut Habermayer.
Present were a number of local international officials, including High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt and EU Delegation to Bosnia Head Johann Sattler.
The incoming EUFOR commander in Bosnia has performed various military posts in the Hungarian Army, including his service in the Army General Staff in 1999. Gen. Sticz also served in the NATO joint operations center in Kosovo from 2003 until 2006, and later also with the Hungarian Defense Ministry.
In one of his earlier statements, Gen. Sticz stressed that EUFOR would intervene only in case the local police could not ensure peace. He also underlined the need to have impartial military forces in Bosnia ready for action in case of escalation, adding that it was most important to preserve peace and stability in the region.
