A Feb. 19 cornerstone-laying ceremony marked the beginning of Phase 2 of the Science and Technology Park in Serbia’s third largest city of Nis, giving the complex a second building worth over 20 million euros.

The director of the Science and Technology Park, Milan Randjelovic, said that the new building will offer 15,000 square meters in new offices and laboratories to more than 80 companies with over 1,000 employees.

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said that the Government of Serbia and the European Investment Bank (EIB) planned to invest over EUR20 million euros in the Phase 2 of the Science and Technology Park, or rather close to EUR25 million together with equipment.

"Serbia’s ICT industry exported an incredible 3.44 billion euros last year. That is almost 10 times more than 11 years ago," Brnabic said, adding that the expectation is that the ICT sector would export products worth EUR10 billion in 2027.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Director for the Western Balkans Matteo Colangeli said that the construction of the Science and Technology Park in Nis was a turning point for the innovation system in Serbia.

"Last year was exceptional for the EBRD in this country with new investments reaching a record EUR850 million. This has placed Serbia among the Bank’s five largest markets at a global level for the first time," Colangeli said.
