PM Against New Elections in Belgrade, Advocates for Progressives to Form Authority

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Feb. 29 that she was advocating the forming of the city authority in Belgrade by the Serbian Progressive Party, and not the holding of new elections in Serbia’s capital.

“I am in favor of forming of the majority because legitimacy (for that) exists. People are tired of elections. I am quite sure that we would have even more votes and would form the majority after the repeated elections, but we would waste time. There are many things that need to be done in Belgrade. Elections are behind us and the prompt forming of institutions is ahead, so that we resume our work,” she told TV Informer.

She stressed, however, that she was not certain that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Progressive Party leader Milos Vucevic would make that decision.

“There is serious pressure on Vucevic and Vucic for the Belgrade city authority to be formed because we have the majority. Vucic has raised the issue of whether we had legitimacy. Many say that legitimacy was uncontestable, because Aleksandar Jerkovic headed the ticket (of the We – Voice of the People) for the City of Belgrade. However, I am not sure we have convinced either Vucic or Vucevic. Vucic’s advice means a lot to us. We have to consult him because the election ticket carried his name,” Brnabic said.
