Serbia needs 20,000 more professional drivers, the Nova website reported on March 4, adding that this figure is reflected in job advertisements. According to the Infostud hiring platform, last year alone 2,600 postings sought drivers, primarily those with a B-class license, which allows the operation of passenger vehicles with up to 8 passenger seats.
About 1,000 new B-class drivers graduate annually from Serbian driving schools, yet the market needs at least double that many with C and D licenses i.e. truck and bus operators.
The latter are in such demand that even novice license holders are being allowed to apply for a bus driver’s license.
The wages for these jobs vary depending on the vehicle. The average bus driver’s salary is RSD80,000 with the option of bonuses for night shifts, while drivers operating company vehicles may earn anything from minimum wage – currently around RSD47,000 – to RSD100,000.
According to Pravda Workers’ Union head Zoran Stefanovic, whose members are employed by Belgrade’s public transportation company, the capital is short about 500 transit drivers, while the foreigners currently holding these positions are having trouble with the job due to their lack of knowledge of both the Serbian language and Belgrade’s streets.
