Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani assessed on June 12 that the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) had been “the most powerful pillar of resistance and hope” and that it had not fought “only for freedom, but also for the soul of Kosovo.”

Speaking at the parade of members of the Kosovo Security Force and the Kosovo police on the occasion of June 12, “Day of Kosovo’s Freedom,” she assessed that, on that date in 1999, KLA fighters and NATO troops “turned fear, terror and pain into hope, and made freedom real.”

“The KLA was the most powerful pillar of resistance and hope. Brave men and women took up arms to defend our right to exist. War was not waged just for the country, but for the very soul of Kosovo. Every life they risked brought us closer to liberty. The courage of the KLA is a tale of heroism that will be passed down the generations. We owe them gratitude that can never be repaid and shall be remembered and honored forever,” Osmani stated in Pristina.

The marking of the “Day of Kosovo’s Freedom” began with a ceremonial session of the Kosovo Assembly, with addresses by President Vjosa Osmani, Premier Albin Kurti, Speaker Glauk Konjufca and Albanian President Bajram Begaj. A reception was scheduled in the evening for representatives of the diplomatic corps and other guests.
