The Social Economic Council is scheduled to hold a meeting on Aug. 19 to discuss the national minimum wage for the next year, media have reported. The meeting will be attended by representatives of the Council, the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS) and the Nezavisnost (Independence) Trade Union Confederation, and the labor and finance ministries.

According to Nezavisnost representative Zoran Ristic, the two trade unions will harmonize their positions on the minimum wage before the meeting.

Nezavisnost President Zoran Stojiljkovic has earlier said he expected the minimum monthly wage to go up from RSD33.000 to RSD34,000 in line with the last year’s agreement, under which the minimum wage should meet the consumer basket value in 2021, which amounted to around RSD37,500 in April.

SSSS Secretary Zoran Mihajlovic has said that the minimum wage should be increased by between 15 and 18 percent to around RSD34,000.

Nebojsa Atanackovic, a member of the Social Economic Council and a representative of the Serbian Association of Employers (SAE), has noted that any hike of the minimum wage above the expected GDP growth of 3.5 percent and inflation of around 1.5 percent, or between five and six percent on aggregate, is unrealistic without compensation by the state.

Last year, Finance Minister Sinisa Mali relieved employers of paying the 0.75 percent unemployment insurance contribution.
