Ombudsman Zoran Pasalic has sent a request to the Interior Ministry urging them to respond to his inquiry regarding the arrest of Aleksandar Obradovic, a whistleblower from the Valjevo Krusik military factory, as the Ministry had failed to act on his initial request within the legal deadline, said an announcement issued by the Ombudsman's Office on Dec. 18.

According to the announcement, the Ministry has another seven days to comply.

The Ombudsman, acting on his own initiative and based on information from the media, in November launched a procedure of controlling the legality and appropriateness in the Ministry's actions in this case, asking that the circumastances of Obradovic's arrest on his work place, be explained.

„Media reports on this event have indicated that during the procedure of arresting this individual the police officials have acted inappropriately and in violation of the law, which prompted the Ombudsman to seek information from the Ministry as to the truthfulness of these claims,“ the announcement added.

The ombudsman wanted to learn what were the legal grounds for Obradovic’s arrest, what measures, actions and powers the officers implemented during the arrest, as well as the time and methods of the measures implemented. He also sought information on whether Obradovic had complained on the police conduct and whether the claims from his complaint had been looked into.

“Given that no answers have been received within the legal deadline, a document urging the Interior Ministry to respond to the initial inquiry was sent on Dec. 17, with an additional deadline of seven days from the reception of the urging being granted [to the Ministry] to act on it,” the announcement from the Ombudsman’s Office said.
