Movement of Free Citizens’ leader Sergej Trifunovic said on Jan. 23 that the announced lowering of the electoral threshold to three percent has only “cemented” the movement’s decision not to participate in “this county fair”, adding that he sees other opposition members as veritable comrades in arms.

Trifunovic told the latest issue of the NIN weekly that he views the threshold lowering as a “trial balloon” sent out by the Serbian president and Serbian Progressive Party leader, Aleksandar Vucic.

“He [Vucic] needs an opposition, and so, like he’s trying to create his own elite, the poor fellow is now trying to make his own opposition,” said Trifunovic, adding that all members of the opposition he sees as legitimate companions.

“The Alliance for Serbia is definitely an artificial creation just like the DOS [Democratic Opposition of Serbia] used to be, but [its existence was] meaningful and necessary at the time it was made, when there was no opposition on the political scene,” explained Trifunovic.

According to him, the Alliance is an assemblage of various interests of different people, politically and in terms of character, and as such is doomed to dissolve, which Trifunovic sees as good, as well as something natural. “The sooner we come clean about our goals, political beliefs and programs, which are in direct conflict with one another, while when it comes to same basic stuff they sort of match, the [sooner] will the Serbian political scene become cleaner and clearer. Right now it resembles Belgrade’s air,” said Trifunovic.

When asked what the parliament would look like after the next elections, Trifunovic answered, “Like Mickey’s workshop. And it comes with the sentence, ‘What does this [part] do, while it’s also broken.”
