Kosovo and Serbia under Increased International Pressure: U.S. Presence in Region on the Rise

Over the past 10 days or so, senior U.S. officials and delegations visited Belgrade and Pristina or spoke about the solving of the Kosovo problem at international meetings on three occasions, which points to the conclusion that the U.S. is getting increasingly involved in the matter. In late February, senior officials in charge of European affairs at the White House National Security Council, John Erratt and William Brad Berkley, visited the two cities. Not many details of the results of their visit were disclosed, but it is clear that the U.S. side insists on the annulment of Kosovo’s import tariffs on goods from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, so the negotiations can resume, and that they want the process to wrap up as soon as possible.
