An inter-party dialogue mediated by the European Parliament (EP) is in the best interest of Serbia, and an important element in the country's efforts to strengthen democracy and increase public confidence in institutions and the election process, David McAllister, chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, and two Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), Vladimir Bilcik and Tanja Fajon, said in a joint statement.

"We've had a constructive meeting with Serbian Speaker Ivica Dacic, mediating the process with us, and we have agreed on the coming steps to support a consensus and confidence building across the political spectrum in Serbia," the three European officials said in the statement.

They said that the role of the European Parliament was not to offer ready-made solutions, but to support a dialogue that would make it possible for political parties to reach an agreement on relevant issues and themes of mutual interest.

The meeting chaired by Dacic and McAllister was attended by Bilcik and Fajon, as well as former MEPs, Eduard Kukan and Knut Fleckenstein.
