Tanja Fajon, a member of the European Parliament, has said that neither the government nor the opposition in Serbia were completely pleased with a dialogue on improving the election process, and that this was good, because it meant that both sides would have to make their own contributions to normalizing their relations.

In an interview with the Blic paper, published on Sept. 26, she said that no one had promised a perfect election if the suggestions of the European Parliament's mediators were accepted, but that this was certainly a step towards improving the process.

"I would like the opposition parties that are not in the parliament to use this opportunity and participate in drafting new rules for national broadcasters, and to be part of the National Election Commission," Fajon said, adding that the inter-party dialogue which was mediated by the EP was over, and that the document that they had forwarded would not be renegotiated.

"At any rate, the European Parliament will carefully monitor developments and the way in which the agreement will be applied. The status of democracy in Serbia is not great, and the agreement is just one step closer to a fair election and better democracy for the Serbian people," Fajon said, adding that it is up to the Serbian side to use that in the best possible way and restore confidence in the election process.
