European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in Donje Medjurovo, near Nis, on Sept. 30 that Serbia had a better future in the EU, but that much remained to be done on its European road.

"Serbia has a better future in the EU. A lot of work lies ahead of us, we must overcome the pandemic and we must foster economic recovery," she said, adding that overcoming the pandemic was only one part of this and not enough, as well as that strategic investment was necessary to secure sustainable recovery.

Earlier on Sept. 30, Von der Leyen said that she had attended the beginning of works on modernizing and rehabilitating the Nis-Brestovac railroad in international rail corridor 10 with the Serbian president, followed by the signing of a contract between Koridori Srbije and the Strabag consortium on the construction a section of the Highway of Peace connecting Merosina-Merosina 1.

"Truly an unbelievable thing, it connects with Austria and Greece and this is truly a motor for the Serbian economy, trade and investment. This is an economic plan that is already functioning in Serbia and we truly are connecting Europe," she said, adding that the majority of youth in Serbia deserved a greener, prosperous and digital future.
