Former members of the Interior Ministry’s working group for disputed privatizations Sinisa Jankovic said on July 28 that “the incumbent authorities have a better relationship with criminals than honest and good police, which, unfortunately, means that the government is criminalized.”

“When we reached the tycoons that are close to the new authorities, some investigations were stopped, some were slowed down and some were continued, but did not end with charges, but were stopped,” Jankovic, who spent most of his career working in the Pancevo police department on uncovering fraud, said.

Speaking on the dissolution of the working group, he told the latest edition of the NIN weekly that the group “was used, or more accurately abused for boosting the Serbian Progressive Party’s ratings, which won absolute power in the snap election in 2014.” He said “that after that were no longer needed, or rather we started becoming a problem in the sense of leading a true battle against political corruption and organized financial crime.”
