Serbia: Routine Pride Parade

On Sept. 14, the Novi Sad-based NGO Vojvodjanski Klub (The Vojvodina Club) announced that the police ban on the planned EuroPride 2022 parade is “an act of repression” and that “fascism must be stopped.”

“The Interior Ministry’s excuse that the EuroPride parade planned for Saturday [Sept. 17] represents a threat to [public] security is disgraceful. It is clear who poses the threat to security – who wants to pummel, to trash the city, which side is aggressively gunning for the other,” the statement reads.

The NGO further said that the recently held religious processions in Belgrade were not deemed threats to public security “because no one was interested in assaulting them while they burned incense around the capital.”

“While others have been brutally denied the freedom to assemble, the churchmongers parade about hiding behind family values while lauding known war crimes,” the Vojvodjanski Klub wrote.

The club emphasized that “one should not withdraw before fascism but stand up and fight against it” and that people have the duty to protect anyone who feels threatened and to stand up against “the primitivism and censers in the streets of Belgrade which are pulling us back into the Middle Ages.”

The NGO called on its members and supporters to travel to Belgrade on Sept. 17 and, in coordination with other organizations protecting human rights and civil freedoms, take part in the EuroPride parade as planned.
