People's Party whip in parliament Miroslav Aleksic said on Sept. 22 that he believed that general elections could be held in 2024 and that it was very likely that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic would resign and that presidential elections would also be held.

In an interview with the Nova newspaper, when asked whether the founding of a state-building movement, as announced by Vucic, was a prelude to elections in 2024 he replied "almost definitely," and that Vucic "needs something new to present to the citizens," the People's Party quoted him as saying. He added that he did not expect elections for the Belgrade assembly in March next year, as "there is not a single reason for holding them at this time."

Aleksic also said that "there is no rational or common sense" explanation why Serbia lacked a cabinet in a situation in which there was a clear majority. "We will probably get one after the legal period expires, because Vucic does not need one, he works alone. I wouldn't be surprised if a government was not created before the deadline" and a new election scheduled, he said.
