Zrenjanin-based NGO Civic Turnaround on Oct. 28 called on Chinese company Linglong to, "in the spirit of friendship strong as steel" between China and Serbia, give Serbia back ownership of the plot near Zrenjanin where it is building a car tire production facility.

Reacting to media reports that construction of the facility has been temporarily suspended and that the Vietnamese and Chinese workers have returned home, the Civic Turnaround said that the Serbian government had "gifted" Linglong almost 100 hectares of land that was once agricultural and urged the company to hand over the "illegally built facilities" near Zrenjanin.

The NGO called on the newly elected Serbian government "not to rescue" the Chinese investor with "new financial injections from the budget," adding that some 75 million euros had already been earmarked for the purpose.
