Once again Serbia is the only Western Balkan state seeking membership in the European Union (EU) to not support a decision by the Council of the EU to introduce restrictive measures for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said on Nov. 25 that the Council had passed Decision 2022/22331 amending a Decision from 2014,  adding two persons and two entities to the list of individuals, entities and bodies subject to restrictive measures for undermining and threatening the integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.

As said in a press release, EU candidates North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania, Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a potential candidate, have aligned with the Council’s Decision, along with EFTA states Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway, as well as the states of the European Economic Area.

Serbia is the only candidate country in the Western Balkans that has failed to align with the Union’s five previous decisions in July and September to introduce restrictive measures to support Ukraine. Serbia also did not accept a decision by the Council in July to implement special measures against terrorism, and another decision a month before that to introduce measures against Iran.
