Marko Nicovic, a lawyer and member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), has said that on Election Day on Oct. 25, the police “will be at the fateful crossroads in terms of positioning themselves on that day, that night and after that.”
“Over the past years, this profession has been humiliated, devastated in terms of personnel, politically abused in favor of the centers of power and not just by the authorities, but also by people in the shadows close to ruling structures,” Nicovic wrote in an op-ed piece published in Belgrade daily Danas.
He stressed that from the opening of the polling stations until their closure, the police will be in a state of tense expectation of what will happen.
“The police have the regime and centers of power on one side, and the people and students on the other. Add to that the criminals and para-structures which will be serving the regime. The police will be pulled in different directions,” Nicovic wrote.
He also said that there are some 35,000 police employees licensed to carry firearms, warning that the number of what he calls para-police and criminals who could be used against citizens could reach up 10,000 individuals.
“Then, it is clear that this number is not enough to conquer the whole of Serbia,” Nicovic, the former Belgrade Police chief, stressed.
