German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Dec. 14 that it’s in the best interest of his country and Europe that the Balkan states that hadn’t joined the European Union (EU) should do so.

Speaking before the German parliament ahead of a summit in Brussels, Scholz welcomed more dynamic activities in the EU enlargement process over the past few months, along with the decision to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina the status of a candidate country.

“It is in our best interest, in the interest of Germany and Europe, that the rest of the Balkans joined the European Union,” Scholz said to German MPs in Berlin. The German chancellor has also welcomed the move to allow Croatia to join the Schengen area, adding that Bulgaria and Romania should be allowed to lift their border controls with other Schengen countries soon, but Austria had blocked the decision.
