In a statement for the March 20 edition of the Politika daily, Milenko Jovanov, the head of the Serbian Progressive Party’s caucus, claimed that a large number of citizens have demanded that the electoral threshold for the National Assembly be raised because they consider many of current parliamentary opposition unworthy of holding their seats.

“Still, it is precisely the three-percent threshold that has allowed the public to see what amateurs [they are dealing with]. Had [said parties] not made it into the Assembly, some people might have continued to take them seriously. This has allowed them to show their true colors,” Jovanov said.

According to him, the Progressives have so far always been “open to discuss and adopt any sane suggestion regarding the elections.” Convinced that the ruling party will continue with this policy, Jovanov concluded that there is “no reason why the topic of the electoral threshold should not be discussed as well.”
