Official statistics clearly show that, due to the adverse effects of inflation, retail sales in Serbia have dropped since the beginning of the year, which indicates that consumer buying power has plummeted as well, said the June 1 edition of the Danas daily.

According to Goran Papovic, the president of the National Organization of Serbia’s Consumers, the main cause of this are the unrealistically high prices of basic foodstuffs amidst the ongoing crisis.

The State Statistics Bureau has reported that retail trade in April 2023 was 6.1 percent less than in the same month of last year.

If comparing the initial quadrimesters of the current and previous year, the decrease in overall retail trade is 4.5 percent. Specifically, food and beverage retail dropped 5.2 percent, while non-food retail fell 4.9 percent.

Least affected by the inflation have been motor fuel sales, which, in the first four months of 2023, were 2.8 percent less than in the same period of 2022.
