During the Dec. 24 evening protests in downtown Belgrade police took 38 individuals into custody, charging them with violent behavior and the attempt to violently overthrow the constitutional order, Police Chief Ivica Ivkovic announced on Dec. 25.

Ivkovic told the RTS public service that police are in the process of gathering further evidence and processing those involved in the riots, and added that he expects more people will be arrested before the end of the day.

The police chief went on to say that the six p.m. rally in front of the State Electoral Commission summoned by the Serbia Against Violence coalition had been registered with the authorities. At one point, however, the protesters began marching toward City Hall, clashing with police for the first time at 6.55. From then on, the conflicts lasted until 9.50 p.m, he stated.

“At 21.50, a police intervention began. Police units were employed strictly within the confines of the law. Two officers sustained serious injuries. One is expected to undergo surgery today,” Ivkovic said.
