While she may have halted Rio Tinto’s plans to mine lithium in Serbia’s Jadar valley back in 2022, then-prime minister and current Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic insisted on June 26 that she never said the so-called Jadar Project was bad for the country.

Speaking for Happy TV, Brnabic dubbed lithium “the oil of the 21st century” and claimed the project was stopped because she realized certain foreign players had ill intent, wanting to “at once get the lithium and weaken President Aleksandar Vucic.”

According to her, any criticism aimed at Rio Tinto is unfounded and disseminated by people unqualified to comment on the matter.

“All those talking about the environment want Serbia to be dependent. They’ve held us back significantly. We could have been number one in Europe,” Brnabic concluded.
