The Council of the European Union (EU) announced on July 26 that it had extended the term of EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other regional issues in the Western Balkans, Miroslav Lajcak, until Jan. 31, 2025.
On July 4, the ambassadors of EU member states supported extending Lajcak's term until the end of next January at the request of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell. According to an earlier report, Lajcak was supposed to take over as the Union’s ambassador to Switzerland on September 1, 2024, but the move seems to have been abandoned as his successor has not been picked yet.
The Council of the EU also appointed new special representatives for Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The new Special Representative in Kosovo will be Estonian diplomat Aivo Orav, who will succeed Tomas Szunyog on Sept 1. His Bosnian counterpart is Luigi Soreca, who is succeeding Johann Sattler on the same day. Both diplomats will serve two-year terms in office.
