Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of migrants in Serbia is currently down by 80 percent, with only 450 people at present housed in the country’s reception centers, Commissioner for Refugees and Migrations Natasa Stanisavljevic said on Aug. 2.
Speaking for the RTS public service, Stanisavljevic said that the number of reception and asylum centers in Serbia was reduced according to these new numbers and that, as of Sept. 1, seven centers will be active in the country.
On July 26, the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration announced that, due to the lower influx of migrants, Serbia would be closing the reception centers in Sid, Dimitrovgrad and Kikinda, while the asylum centers in Sjenica, Obrenovac, Vranje and Krnjaca and the reception centers in Bujanovac, Presevo and Principovac will continue to operate at full capacity.
Commissioner Stanisavljevic also stated that the Commisariate has prepared for the eventuality of the migrant influx rising again.
