The Serbian and Romanian energy ministers, Dubravka Djedovic-Handanovic and Sebastian Burduja, signed in Kladovo, on Aug. 5, a Memorandum of Understanding concerning the construction of a new gas interconnector between Serbia and Romania.

Serbia’s section will be 13 kilometers long, and the remaining 86 kilometers will be running through Romania. The minimum projected capacity is 1.6 billion cubic meters of gas, and the Serbian section is expected to be completed by 2027.

It will be another source of natural gas, linking Serbia’s Mokrin hub with the BRUA transport gas line in Romania.

“Thanks to the connection with Romania and Bulgaria, and at a later date with North Macedonia, too, Serbia will be an indispensable transit route and an important partner in providing energy security for Central and Eastern Europe regarding gas deliveries,” the minister said.

Her Romanian counterpart said that Serbia and Romania “cooperate closely in accelerating electrical energy interconnections, as all the conditions are in place for the completion of the Resica-Pancevo section in the first half of 2025.”

Burduja has said that it’s necessary that energy runs smoothly between Serbia and Romania, creating a competitive market that will bring favorable prices to consumers, energy security and the diversification of energy sources.
