Plans are in the works to create a museum dedicated to Olympic champion Novak Djokovic at the Belgrade Waterfront, media have reported, adding that the idea should be pitched to the famous tennis player sometime next week.

According to the Aug. 8 edition of the Vecernje Novosti daily, the museum would represent yet another tourist attraction for Serbia’s capital while also paying homage to the legendary athlete, who has celebrated and promoted his country for years.

The project was also recently mentioned by President Aleksandar Vucic. “Rafael Nadal has a museum in Palma de Mallorca, yet Djokovic has surpassed him in tennis. [By building the museum] we want to show our respect for what [Djokovic] has achieved, but also to attract tourists,” Vucic told the press on Aug. 6, while touring the construction site of the National Stadium in Surcin.

According to art historian Borka Bozovic, the creation of the museum’s is merely a means for Vucic “to cash in on part of Novak’s Olympic fame” by using it to further his own popularity “among those voters whom he consistently mesmerizes by lies and manipulations in the media.”

“It would be better if [Vucic] devoted his attention to the many [state] institutions hovering on the brink of ruin, because Djokovic has created the best possible museum and trophy for himself through his success and victories,” Bozovic concluded in her statement for the Aug. 8 Danas daily.
