A group of Serb associations from Kosovo and Metohija announced on Aug. 14 that they would blockade all the administrative crossings toward central Serbia unless the Serbs, who the Pristina authorities had “illegally” arrested, are released by Aug. 19.
The president of the Managing Board of the Association of Women for Kosovo and Metohija, Slavica Vujacic, stated at a news conference in Belgrade’s Media Center that they had launched peaceful protests at the start of August, with support of 19 homeland associations, because of the arrest of Serbs from Kosovo and Metohija. “We have four demands and we want them all fulfilled. If not, we shall take different measures. We want the urgent release of the arrested Serbs, the return of our property, the forming and reinstating of Serb municipalities and that the bridge across the Ibar River is not opened,” Vujacic said.
She stated that, since the end of the conflict in Kosovo and Metohija in 1999, only 1.7 percent of the Serbs had returned to their homes. “We are starting the blockades, hoping that the Albanians would give up on their unrealistic dream of an independent Kosovo. For as long as there are Serbs in the world, that will not be possible,” Vujacic stated.
A representative of the Homeland Association of Klina, Radosav Djurdjevic, has stated that they were ready to assist all the Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija who, I his words, “suffer daily the terror of the Nazi regime and of Premier Albin Kurti.”
