Sanja Sakan, a scientist at the Institute for Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, said on Aug. 22 that it was not possible to use technology for extracting lithium and boron from jadarite, without that posing a risk to the environment, saying that she was speaking as a scientist and patriot who above all cared about science and the people.

"I think the entire area should not be sacrificed. I do not oppose progress, I am a scientist, but when you are entering large-scale projects, you have to calculate risk.  Densely populated areas should not be sacrificed to open mines and factories, everywhere around the world this is done in sparsely populated and uninhabited regions, mines are separated from extraction facilities, processing is even done in other countries," Sakan said in an interview with NIN.

She recently voiced this view at a gathering between President Aleksandar Vucic and citizens of Mali Zvornik. Asked whether separation was possible in this case and whether tailings could be moved to another part of the country, she replied that everything was planned to be in one spot.
