Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated on Sept. 5 that he was “not sure” that the Rio Tinto company wanted to invest enough money into protecting the environment and water in Serbia, in connection with the announced lithium mining project near the Drina River.

Vucic said he “feared” that Rio Tinto wanted to invest as little as possible into environment protection in order to have more profits, but that he would not allow it.

“Science has gone far, everything can be clean and the only issue is whether someone wants to invest enough money, and I am not sure if they want to. According to the documents we analyzed yesterday (Sept. 4), they have not demonstrated (such intentions) so far,” Vucic told reporters after visiting the units of the Army of Serbia on Mt. Gucevo.

He said he had discussed lithium with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who had invited him to visit that country, where the production of this mineral resource had already started.
