Should Serbia go ahead with the proposed reintroduction of its mandatory military service, this could result in dual-citizen young Hungarians leaving the country, Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians head Balint Pastor said on Nov. 4.

In an interview for the Vecernje Novosti daily, the leader of Serbia’s largest Hungarian party – which is member of the ruling coalition – explained that the issue has already been discussed with Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, President Aleksandar Vucic and Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic. What remains to be seen, he said, is whether an acceptable solution can be reached.

Pastor agrees that the law cannot include provisions pertaining only to Hungarians, adding that no one was even contemplating such a solution.

In September, the Serbian Cabinet announced that it had formed a task group for determining how best to reintroduce mandatory military service to the country. The current proposal aims to launch the obligation in September 2025 and envisions 75 days of training and service for every adult male citizen of Serbia.
